Cosmin Garlesteanu – Prismagination project

“Everyone’s childhood is beautiful as you dare to dream indefinitely, you dare to do almost anything. Everything is a continuous experiment, a continuous wonder about what is or seems new, an endless time to play. 32 years old and still a kid. I believe that the best stuff turns out when, while playing, you take things seriously. About two years ago I discovered this guy…Sam Hurd, a wedding photographer, and his compositions caught my eye. They were different. He was using a prism in order to emphasize the photographed couples, thus bringing some extra creativity into his images. I said to myself: what about street shots using such a prism? Said and done. I started to wander the streets. Wide open aperture, lots and lots of patience and just about as much swearing. 2mm higher or lower and the shot is compromised. Curious and intrigued people, looking at me in a strange manner as I lean the prism horizontally or vertically. And again horizontally. Until the result is right. Or not… I never get bored. As long as using this piece of glass helps developing my imagination and being open to the things around me, I will continue photographing like that. For sure. What if it’s too abstract? What if it doesn’t fit in any photographic genre? What if I’m going to be criticized? Well, if it helps me dream, these questions don’t really matter. Perhaps i should have bought two of them, as I managed to chip off my prism twice.” – Cosmin Garlesteanu
